15. Borderlands

This game features the best aspects of RPGs and combines them with a tightly controlled shooter. Set in a post apocalyptic world, society has crumbled and it really is survival of the fittest. To ensure your survival, you are equipped with weapons that will obliterate your enemies. The weapons vary from SMGs that can light enemies on fire to rocket launchers that fire three rounds with one shot. There’s always something to do, with many side quests available. Some have issues with the “cartoonish” graphics. For those who don’t mind, it’s a great game.

14. Gears of War

This is the game that showed the world what the current generation of consoles was capable of. Set in the near future, humanity has set aside its petty differences to ensure mankind’s survival. The game has brutal ways to finish enemies, like curb stomping their heads. In the game, it feels like you and your squad is humanities last hope. This problem (though minor), along with others is why it deserves this spot.  The GOW series set a great foundation with Gears of War 1, and GOW 2, built on it. Look for GOW 2 higher on the list.

13. Mass Effect

Mass Effect (the whole series) follows Commander Shepherd on his quest to stop the Geth attack. Mass Effect has RPG elements combines with FPS to make a great game. The revolutionary conversation wheel gives you the ability to make your character actually have its own character. How you decide to act and speak has an impact in the Mass Effect universe. For example, you may need someone’s help, trying to solve a mystery. You have two choices, you can be mean and try to force them to speak, or you can ask nicely. The world really responds to you. Like the Gears of War series, the first installment sets the solid foundation for later games to build on.

12. Batman Arkham Asylum

The opening scene is Batman racing towards Arkham Asylum, with the Joker in his custody. Without revealing too much, the tables get turned and you, as Batman, must fight your way out and make sense out of the situation. The setting sets the game up great, giving the feeling that Arkham is almost like its own character. The AI is smart in this game. This keeps you changing your tactics and adds more fun and excitement in the game.

11. Bioshock

Set in the underwater city of Rapture, your objective is to get out alive. Although the objective sounds simple, Rapture is a dangerous place. People wanted to do whatever they wanted, controversial experiments etc. This led to the creation Rapture, and its eventual downfall: ADAM. People went crazy, trying to get ADAM however they could, like addicts. Throughout the game you will meet people that are trying to kill you for ADAM, Little sisters, which you can get ADAM from, and Big Daddies, the protectors of the Little Sisters. Through the use of ADAM, you gain powers called plasmids. Early plasmids include electrocuting and setting enemies ablaze. Rapture has a unique feel to it and it’s tough to tear yourself away from Bioshock.

10. Battlefield Bad Company 2

This game deserves this spot because it gears itself more towards online play and less towards single player. This is a recent trend among FPS, so it’s not uncommon. However, the competitors of BC 2 put more time into their campaign. It almost feels generic, with few bright spots. It tries to have set piece moments that are supposed to inspire awe. It doesn’t quite pull it off though. What makes this game great is its online play. Players must work as a team to be successful. The game has destructive environments, with the ability to destroy entire buildings or give yourself a hiding place. This reduces camping , making combat thrilling.

9. Forza Motorsport 3

The current racing king (in my opinion) offers an incredibly deep experience. This is through RPG elements, leveling up. The more races you win, the higher level you are, and the same goes for your car. Keep the same car for awhile and your car will level up too. Graphics and physics are great, among the best in racing games. It’s tough to wait what improvements will be in Forza Motorsport 4.

8. Dead Space

As you can tell by now, this list is devoted to not only great sequels but the games they were built upon. Such is the case with Dead Space. One if not best horror games of this console generation, Dead Space will make you jump more than once. The game’s setting is onboard the Ishmura, a mining ship that has lost communication. You and your team are sent find out what has happened. The goriness is showed early on. Spoiler alert: your team doesn’t last long. You watch behind a window while they’re killed. Part of what makes a horror game is the feeling of isolation, which is one of the highlights of Dead Space. Walking down a hallway with the light flicking, hearing a tapping sound against metal is unnerving. Some corpses will jump out at you and attack you, so you can save yourself a couple years of your life (seriously this game is scary) by curb stomping all corpses. Dead Space intensity level is sky high, and will keep you constantly on your feet. Look for Dead Space 2, scheduled to release later this month, to build on this great game.

7. Assassin’s Creed 2

Assassin’s Creed 2 improves on all the great features on the first, and gets rid of the nuances. It’s actually fun to play, with the repetitive side missions gone. The plot has more twists and turns, revealing more of what is going on current time. There is much to do, with puzzles to solve and exploring is rewarded. The setting is what gives AC 2 a different feel from its predecessor, as jumping rooftop to rooftop feels natural.

6. Halo Reach

The last game Bungie will make send the team out on a high note. Some will have complains like why brutes are in the game when they’re first appearance is in the second. Or why there are new weapons are available in Reach. I don’t have an explanation for the first (you’re really complaining about that? You may spend too much time with video games) but the second complaint I do. There are prototype weapons that are a blast to play with, annihilating the Covenant. Those prototype weapons never made it off Reach, and that’s my biggest problem with the game. No matter how hard you fight, no matter how many Covenant you kill, you know that Reach will fall. For me, this is a minor complain, it’s not about the end, it’s about the journey. Combat is Halo, what more do I need to say. It’s exciting, and nonstop action. This is, without a doubt, the most fun Halo game.

5. Gears of War 2

Humanity goes on the offensive, thinking the Locust are weakened, trying to end the fight once and for all. My biggest problem with GOW 1 is addressed early on, which seemed like you and your squad were the last humans left to fight. This is changed, early on in the game,  as you see a ton of gigantic trucks and helicopters taking it to the Locust. This gives the feeling that there are more people fighting than you and your team. Combat is brutal with more ways to finish downed enemies. The story actually has substance, which is a rarity among FPS these days. Some of the coolest moments in gaming are in Gears of War 2.

4. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

One of the most popular FPS of all time, MW2 has epic set piece moments in the campaign that make your jaw drop. Spec Ops and the campaign actually are fun single player, and don’t feel like they’re added on.  The graphics are among the best out there. Spec Ops is a blast, especially with a friend to help you. Some of the moments in the campaign are in Spec Ops, like riding down a gigantic mountain on a snowmobile with bad guys chasing you. Online is the best part of MW 2, with perks and weapons to be unlocked. You feel like you’re always getting rewarded, receiving an upgrade or unlocking something, which makes it hard to stop playing. With a good campaign, Spec Ops, and Online, you will miss some sleep playing MW 2.

3. Grand Theft Auto 4

A nobody striving to rule the city. This is the standard GTA story, and GTA 4 follows suit. In order to gain respect, you have to make friends, connections. By those people, you will be asked to race cars, take out someone, or even work with the police. With all open-world games, there’s always something to do. If you get bored or stuck in the main story, you can go on the search for hidden packages or round up the police’s most wanted. The last mission is unforgettable, involving you storming a warehouse full of bad guys and a helicopter fight across the city. GTA 4 is one of the best games of this generation.

2. Red Dead Redemption

In the Wild West, you play as John Marston, former gang member. The West is at a crossroads, with the time you could settle your differences with someone with your gun ending and government intervention. The government is trying to tame the West, civilize it. The government is blackmailing you, take out your former gang or your family is killed. In order to do that, you’re going to need some help. To get that help, you are going to have to run errands for them, earn their loyalty. Your adventures will have you travel across a huge part of the West and even into Mexico. Due to the technology of the time, some might be worried that combat would be boring. The game does a great job making it fun though. There’s always something to do, like helping out someone whose cattle was stolen by bandits or helping an injured women. You can become the best hunter in the area, taking down bear and wolf, to name a few. This is the best Western game ever.

1.  Mass Effect 2

This is almost a perfect game. There’s very little wrong with it. From graphics to gameplay, everything is done masterfully. The music is excellent and really sets the tone. You will find yourself boarding a derelict ship. It appears empty, but strangely threatening. Adding to this feeling is the music in the background which has an ominous ring to it. There are less RPG elements in Mass Effect 2, but some are still present, making it more available to casual gamers.  You level up your character, upgrading abilities and powers. The conversation wheel is still present, which gives the opportunity for newcomers of the series a chance to get familiar with what happened in the first Mass Effect. Though minor, I have one complaint, and that is mining for minerals. You have to mine for minerals; they’re needed to upgrade weapons, armor, your ship, etc. It’s time consuming and boring. Like I said, it’s minor and no reason not to play this game. Mass Effect 2 is the most addicting game I’ve ever played and it’s a blast.
